Learning how to rank in Perplexity AI is now a priority for Indian businesses. When I audited our EdTech products at LearnQ.ai for AI search visibility, I expected ChatGPT to show citations first. It was not ChatGPT. The first AI citation came from Perplexity, and once I checked the data, the reason became clear.

Before getting into the fixes, it is worth understanding why Perplexity requires a different approach than ChatGPT. The two platforms look similar on the surface but index content through completely different mechanisms.

Perplexity is different. It uses its own crawler called PerplexityBot to build its search index directly. It does not depend on Bing. This means the two platforms need to be treated as separate optimization targets, not interchangeable ones.
There is also a second crawler to know about: Perplexity-User. Perplexity-User is triggered directly by user requests to support user actions and is tied to real user activity. When someone pastes a URL into Perplexity and asks it to summarize the page, that is Perplexity-User at work.

Step 1: Allow PerplexityBot in Your robots.txt
This is the first thing to check. Many Indian websites block PerplexityBot without knowing it, either through explicit robots.txt directives or through security plugins that blanket-block non-Googlebot crawlers.
Open your robots.txt file (yourdomain.com/robots.txt) and check for any of the following:

Either of these prevents Perplexity from indexing your content. To allow PerplexityBot, add these directives explicitly:

According to Perplexity’s official help center, PerplexityBot will not index the full or partial text content of any site that disallows it via robots.txt. The good news is that Perplexity does not build foundation models, so your content will not be used for AI model pre-training – a concern some site owners have about allowing AI crawlers.
For WordPress sites, edit robots.txt directly through Rank Math (SEO > General > Edit robots.txt) or through WPCode if you have a custom snippet.
The Cloudflare problem most Indian sites don’t know about
Fixing robots.txt alone may not be enough. If your site uses Cloudflare and you have Bot Fight Mode or Super Bot Fight Mode enabled, Cloudflare silently blocks PerplexityBot at the infrastructure level, regardless of what your robots.txt says.
To fix this, go to your Cloudflare dashboard, navigate to Security, then Bots. According to Perplexity’s official crawler documentation, you need to go to Security, then WAF, click on Custom Rules, and create a new rule to allow Perplexity bots, setting the action to Allow so these requests bypass other security rules.
After making changes, note that changes to your robots.txt file may take up to 24 hours to be recognized by Perplexity’s systems.

Step 2: Structure Your Content for Perplexity’s Answer Format
Once PerplexityBot can access your site, the next question is whether your content is structured in a way that Perplexity can extract and cite.
Perplexity does not quote full articles. It extracts short, self-contained answer units from specific sections of a page. If your content is written in long flowing paragraphs without clear section breaks, Perplexity has trouble isolating a citable passage.
Here is what the right structure looks like:
- Lead every section with a direct answer. Within the first 40 to 60 words of any section, the core answer should be stated plainly. The detail and context come after.
- Use question-format H2 and H3 subheadings. Instead of “Our Export Process”, write “How Does the Export Process Work?” Perplexity scans headings to identify what question a section answers.
- Keep paragraphs short. Three sentences per paragraph is a good ceiling. Perplexity parses dense paragraphs poorly.
- Include data points. Pages with verifiable statistics get cited more frequently in Perplexity answers than pages making qualitative claims without evidence. This is consistent with what I observed across the LearnQ.ai and VEGA AI pages we audited.
- Add author attribution clearly. Perplexity weighs authorship signals. A page that shows the author’s name, their role, and publication date is treated as more authoritative than an anonymous page. This is where your About page and author bio boxes matter.
A before and after example:
Before (generic paragraph): “Our logistics company helps businesses move goods across India efficiently using modern infrastructure and experienced teams.”
After (Perplexity-ready): “Indian logistics companies typically take 3 to 7 days for cross-state freight movement, depending on the route and cargo type. [Company name] serves 18 states with an average delivery time of 4.2 days for B2B shipments.”
The second version has a direct answer, a specific number, and a verifiable claim. Perplexity can extract and cite it. Step 3: Create a Perplexity Page
Perplexity Pages is a feature that lets anyone publish long-form content directly on Perplexity’s platform. These pages are indexed by Perplexity itself and cited in answers more readily than external pages in many cases, because they live natively on the platform.
For Indian businesses, this is an underused opportunity. Most businesses in the space have not created a Perplexity Page yet, which means first-mover advantage is still available for most categories.
How to create a Perplexity Page:
- Go to perplexity.ai and sign in or create a free account
- Click on “Library” in the left sidebar
- Select “New Page”
- Write your content using Perplexity’s built-in editor, which includes AI-assisted research tools
- Publish publicly
What to publish as a Perplexity Page for your business:
- An FAQ page about your product or service, written in question-and-answer format
- An India-specific guide for your industry (example: “How Indian manufacturers can find international buyers in 2026”)
- A comparison page your potential customers are searching for (example: “B2B logistics options for MSME exporters in India”)
- A data-backed explainer about a problem you solve
The goal is not to create a sales page. It is to create genuinely useful reference content that people search for. When Perplexity users ask related questions, your Page becomes a citation source.
Step 4: Use Reddit Strategically for Perplexity Citations
This is the step most business owners skip because it does not feel like traditional marketing. It is also one of the highest-leverage moves available right now.
Perplexity cites Reddit more than almost any other content source. Community discussions, particularly detailed first-person answers in relevant subreddits, regularly appear as citations in Perplexity answers on business and industry topics.
For Indian businesses, the relevant subreddits include r/IndianStartups, r/india, r/IndiaInvestments, r/AskIndia, r/digital_marketing, and category-specific ones like r/ecommerce or r/logistics depending on your sector.
What gets cited by Perplexity from Reddit:
Perplexity tends to extract Reddit comments that are direct, detailed, and answer a question with specifics. A 200-word reply that starts with the answer and includes a data point or personal experience is far more likely to be cited than a one-line opinion.
The content should be genuinely helpful, not promotional. A comment that reads like an ad will not be cited and may get downvoted. A comment from a practitioner explaining what they found when they tried something is exactly what Perplexity looks for.
This is a medium-term play. New Reddit accounts with low karma have limited reach and their content is less likely to rank in threads. Consistent participation over 60 to 90 days, building genuine karma and credibility in relevant subreddits, is what creates the citation opportunity. Start now so the foundation is in place when you need it.
Step 5: Audit and Rewrite Your Existing High-Value Pages
The four steps above all create new opportunities. This step converts your existing content into Perplexity-ready assets.
Pick your top five pages by organic traffic or business value. For each one, run this audit:
Does the page open with a direct answer? If the first paragraph of your homepage or service page starts with “Welcome to…” or “We are a leading provider of…” that is not a Perplexity-citable opening. Rewrite it to start with what you do and who it is for, stated plainly.
Does every H2 section start with the answer? Go section by section. If any section buries the key point in paragraph three or four, rewrite it so the answer comes first.
Is there a FAQ section? Add one if not. FAQPage schema increases citation probability significantly. Each FAQ question and answer should be self-contained – a complete answer that makes sense without reading the rest of the page.
Are there verifiable statistics with sources? Replace vague claims with specific, sourced data points. Link to the original research, not a secondary article. Perplexity traces source credibility.

What Indian Businesses Should Prioritize First
If you are starting from zero, here is the order that gives you the fastest results:
Week 1: Fix robots.txt and Cloudflare settings. This takes less than an hour and is the prerequisite for everything else. Without it, none of the other work matters.
Week 1-2: Reformat your top five pages using the content structure principles in Step 2. Focus especially on the opening paragraph of each section and ensure every H2 answers a question directly.
Week 2: Create one Perplexity Page about your core product or service area. Keep it genuinely useful, not promotional.
Ongoing: Start participating in relevant Reddit communities. Set a realistic target of three to five quality comments per week in relevant threads.
Based on what I tracked across the LearnQ.ai and VEGA AI product pages, AI search citations typically start appearing within four to eight weeks after fixing the infrastructure and restructuring the content. The timeline depends on how competitive your category is in Perplexity’s index and how frequently people are asking related queries.
How to Check if You Are Appearing in Perplexity
Checking your Perplexity visibility takes five minutes and should be done weekly once your optimizations are live.
Manual check: Open perplexity.ai and search for the specific questions your customers ask. Also search your brand name directly. Check whether your site appears in the citations panel on the right side of any answer.
Track Perplexity referral traffic in GA4: Go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic Acquisition. Add a secondary dimension for “Session source/medium.” Perplexity referrals typically appear as perplexity.ai / referral. Note that a portion of Perplexity-driven visits may show up under direct / (none) if users copy-paste URLs from answers rather than clicking citations directly.
Set up Google Alerts: Create an alert for your brand name and key product terms. When Perplexity cites you and users search your brand on Google afterward, that branded search volume uptick will show in Google Search Console. This is one of the clearest indirect signals of AI search-driven awareness.
